How to talk when no one can see you

You’re on a conference call.

You host a podcast.

You’re leading a webinar.

In all of these scenarios, the only tool of communication available to you is your voice. A few points to remember:

  • For reasons researchers are just beginning to understand, we gather relevant information about the words someone is saying from being able to see how their lips move. When your audience can’t see you, they (and you) are at a disadvantage.
  • Voices with little inflection or rhythmic variety are easy to tune out.
  • You don’t know what else people might be doing while you’re speaking.

In short, bringing intention, energy, and vocal dynamics to your speaking voice will make an enormous difference in how effective you are.
