This is one of the most important things to know when you are preparing a speech or a presentation. Audiences are selfish.
Many people fear that the audience is judging them—that is usually misplaced. Most audiences are willing, and even excited, to see what you have to offer. But we’re not there for you. We want to know what’s in it for us. What value are you going to bring?
When you’re preparing, answer this question. What’s in it for them? What can I say that will bring value to this audience? How can I deliver this material in a way that is engaging and appropriate for the occasion?
One more thing. Don’t bury the value in the fifth paragraph of your talk. Bring your energy, excitement, passion, and purpose into the way you walk onstage and the first words out of your mouth. Don’t make us wait. Remember, we’re selfish.
